- This is good advice, I use a Zoom v34i (model 275) modem, and had slow
- connections as well before I got the new rom chip. As you said you were a novice,
- however, you may not know how or where to type the "ati3" instruction to get a
- decent response, and it looks as though Mr. Rosenzweig isn't familiar with Netcom's
- Netcruiser software. It doesn't allow you to send strings to your modem and see the
- results. Use another communications program (Telix, ProComm, even the Windows
- Terminal will work).
-
- Another possibility you may wish to look into is the work-load on the
- computer you dial to connect to Netcom. Netcom has been plagued with slow connection
- rumors and testimonies since the dawn of time. (So I exaggerate a little. :)
- If you connect at a busy site, your slow www page loading speeds may be the result.
- This would also be seen in slow ftp times. If the slow speed is mainly tied to one
- site, it could just be that site, too. Not all sites are created equal, sadly.
-
- There is a program out there, somewhere, called NUGLOPS or something close to
- that. It's designed to answer questions like yours, including IP address, etc, that
- the people at Netcom conveniently left out of thier program. (Ever notice that there's
- no clock on the wall in a doctor's waiting room? Same principal - They don't want you
- to know how long you're sitting there waiting) I see references to it all the time in
- the netcom.general newsgroup. That should at least be a starting point for you to find
- your answers.

-
- My last piece of advice, ditch Netcruiser. It was designed for the novice user
- I know, but to make it look all nice and flowery, they had to leave out some very
- powerful features. Netscape is a better browser than Netcruiser could ever be. While
- I don't use it, Free Agent is supposed to be a better newsgroup reader, and Eudora a
- better email program. Netcom even provides (this is a stretch) "support" on their
- webtech system for installing/using these other programs. Using windows' dialler, and
- other third party programs, you'll be able to see the whole picture on your connection,
- AND make changes to it.
